Vidyaranya, situated in Bangalore, is a 25-year-old organisation that works towards empowering women, children, and the elderly and also accepts food donations from events across the city. 
The food is checked for freshness, and is then distributed among over 1000 beneficiaries, according to Anjali Chauhan, the marketing head at Vidyaranya. “Many of those organising large-scale functions such as marriages call us beforehand so that we can arrange for transportation”, she says. Volunteers are involved in all aspects of the organization, and around 70 to 100 people are fed every day. 
Vidyaranya also has tie-ups with a few restaurants, which donate food regularly.

R.B. Shivakumar
This Bengaluru-based social activist picks up leftover food from wedding halls, parties, hotels, as well as homes (if there is a big quantity), and distributes it to the needy. Before agreeing to pick up the food, Mr. Shivakumar tastes it. He also picks up only vegetarian food.

Mumbai’s Dabbawalas have come up with the ‘Roti Bank’ initiative to prevent wastage of food at social gatherings. Leftover food from birthday parties, weddings etc. will be collected by the Dabbawalas and given to the needy. They also take small quantities of excess food from homes. Shelter Don Bosco is an NGO working with the street children of Mumbai since 1987. It has implemented several projects to help such children in the city. Initially an operation in Coimbatore, started by three engineering students, No Food Waste collects excess food from weddings and parties .This “food recovery project” has gained a steady base of volunteers throughout the years, who have helped feed over 2,68,000 people till date.
No Food Waste will only collect food with quantities for more than fifty people. Lower quantities can be dropped off at any of the local facilities. Co-founder Dinesh Manickam shares, “Initially, we used local transport, however, now we have our own vehicle and feed over 500 people daily in Coimbatore alone,” says Dinesh, ecstatic that the project has been so well received.

Starting with five people, now has more than 150 volunteers on its mission to see a hunger-free Hyderabad. In last two years, the NGO, which includes students, housewives, entrepreneurs and employees, distributed food and shared smiles with 1.5 lakh people.

The NGO also collects leftovers from hotels and function halls, and conducts a quality check before distributing the food to the underprivileged people at government hospitals.
